Best File Format for Uploads
How to structure your files so the AI retrieves accurate answers every time.
Use a plain text file (.txt) whenever possible. It is the most reliable format because what you write is exactly what the AI receives. No formatting gets lost, no text gets scrambled.
PDF and Word documents are also supported, but they come with trade-offs:
- PDF: Works well for simple, single-column documents. Complex layouts, tables, columns, or scanned PDFs often produce scrambled or incomplete text when extracted.
- DOCX / DOC: Works well for straightforward Word documents. Headers, footers, sidebars, and text boxes may be extracted in the wrong order or skipped entirely.
- TXT: Always extracted exactly as written. Recommended for all Q&A content.
If you have a PDF or Word document and the AI is not performing well, export it as plain text and re-upload. In most cases this fixes the issue.
